The Club, Training & Membership Information

Boxing is an extremely physical sport requiring skill, intelligence, high levels of fitness, and a degree in discipline. Unfortunately the typical perception of boxing is of two beefy but not very bright protagonists, belting the living hell out of each other; televised events support this.

Regular training can lead to enormous health benefits such as increased strength, speed, endurance, and agility, while simultaneously promoting self reliance, body awareness and quick thinking.

What the UQ Boxing Club Offers…

The UQ Boxing Club caters for women and men of all levels from beginners to experienced boxers, and often has boxers competing in the Queensland Amateur Boxing Association (QABA) Titles and University Championships.

Whether you want serious coaching for competition, training for self-defense, or just an interesting sport to increase fitness, the UQ Boxing Club has something for you.
We have experienced coaches to help you develop your skills and fitness.

Training sessions include: warm-up exercises, technique drills, skipping, and use of equipment such as: heavy punching bags, speedballs and floor-to-ceiling balls. Pairs work is conducted using focus mitts, and more experienced members spar under strict supervision. All equipment is provided except for mouth guards (if sparring) and hand wraps.

Club Location

The club is located at the Martial Arts Gym, inside the UQ Sport & Fitness Centre (building 25) on Union Road, St Lucia.

Training & Session Schedule

Casual boxing training will be coached for one hour by ex-Olympiad Richard Ford on Tuesdays and Thursdays. On Monday nights, an extra session is run by exciting young professional boxer “Cyclone” Tyrone Tongia. You will find both coaches very friendly and approachable. The classes are suitable for anyone, no matter what your experience or ability. The friendly and social vibe of UQ will ensure that everyone feels welcome, and you will hopefully make a bunch of new friends.

You will be provided with a great introduction to boxing by participating in technical shadow-boxing drills and non-contact partner work. After the class breaks up, there will be time for conditioning. Ask coaching staff for advice on conditioning drills and please make use of our skipping ropes, medicine balls and heavy-bags. Take the opportunity to introduce yourself to the competitors and ask if they will do some partner work with you. As a club, we aim to see a rapport build where you will know the boys and girls competing and will want to cheer them on at tournament. If you are feeling fit and confident and would like to take your boxing further, please approach coaching staff and ask about opportunities to spar.

Self directed sessions will allow for open mat space and use of equipment to hone skills, techniques and fitness.
