The Sunday Club – Every Sunday

The Sunday Club keeps on firing starting at 2pm in the MAG. Thereafter, a spot of sport, touch, soccer, and soon to come… BACKYARD CRICKET!! After ball sports, it’s off to a local watering hole, followed by a feed, you just can’t lose.

Mundine vs. Acosta – Wednesday 15th November

The Regatta Hotel is screening the Mundine vs. Acosta fight live on Wednesday the 15th November. Word on the street is that we’re all meeting up at the Regatta at around 6:30pm to get some good seats downstairs. The undercards start at 7pm, with the main event starting at around 9:00 or 10:00pm (approximately). This should be a pretty good fight given Mundine’s possible ‘ring rust’ from 6 months out of the ring.

FREE COFFEE or Chocolate

If you would like a ‘free’ coffee (Mr Beans Voucher) or chocolate (King Size - you have a choice) I’m giving them away in return for participation in a short 10-15 minute study. The study is a very easy perceptual study involving the use of a Head Mounted.

**I am testing all day on Wednesday the 15th November, from 7am - 6pm. **

Please feel free to just rock up on the day, or better yet, send me an email in advance and reserve a time. My only requirement is that you have not done this, or one of my other studies, and that you have normal or corrected-to-normal vision. If Wednesday is not suitable for you, let me know and perhaps we can find another day. To participate, contact Stas: stas@psy.uq.edu.au – Your assistance would be much appreciated.

UQ Boxing and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)

Don’t forget that UQ Boxing Club members are still welcome to attend Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) sessions held in the MAG on Friday nights from 6pm to 8pm. In this session guest coaches take the class on a rotating basis and they include many internationally respected competitors and coaches. The cost varies with the coach, but a standard “mat fee” is $5 per session. There is also a Sunday session, from 2:30 - 4:30pm which is mostly MMA but includes some basic self defence taught by Stefan (with some knife work as well). Everyone is welcome to attend and there is $2 training fee that you pay to the coach. Depending on the availability of other coaches, the session will include working on wrestling, takedowns and light sparring. Saturday sessions (1 - 3pm) are mainly for grappling and again there is a $2 coaching fee that you pay on the spot. For more information contact Stefan: stefan@itee.uq.edu.au.

Coaching Changes

There have been several coaching changes within the club with the retirements of Jeff Roots and Mikko Mattinen. Jeff has been a fantastic asset to the club contributing to the successful development of many members both inside and outside the ring over many years. Thanks for your many years of great service Jeff. Now don’t go getting all teary, because Jeff will still be around; he’s just decided to hang up his coaching gloves.

In a second retirement coach Mikko Mattinen is heading back to Finland after a great 12 month at the club and 6 months of coaching. Mikko took the Tuesday morning and Sunday afternoon sessions for semester 2, 2006 as well as several Tuesday and Thursday night classes. During his short stay, Mikko also managed to pick up the Tommy Guivarra Memorial Shield, a fitting award to recognise his club contributions. During his time, Mikko has also represented the club and assisted several other members do the same.

As a result of Jeff’s retirement, UQ Boxing Club is proud to welcome on board several new coaches to the club. The following people recently obtained their Level 1 Coaching Certificate and will be contributing towards coaching at the Club: Dylan Katzer, Enrico Ryll, Sean Bowes, and Jason Rice. It’s great to have all these guys on the coaching team as they bring a wealth of boxing, competitive and club knowledge with them into a leadership position.

International Success

Two UQ Boxing Club members, Todd Kidd and Jarrod Fletcher, are currently on a boxing tour through Europe with the Australian Institute of Sport. In their first competition, The Amber Gloves Tournament in Kaliningrad, Russia, Todd won the Bronze medal and was named ‘Best Fighter of the Tournament’. This is particularly impressive as Todd was recovering from glandular fever at the time. In their second competition, the 35th City of Ostrva Grand Prix, Jarrod won bronze but was defeated by the eventual Gold medal winner. Todd was beaten in the final and took home the Silver medal. Congratulations Todd and Jarrod.

OktoberFist

Location: Brisbane Broncos Leagues Club

Red Corner Promotions and the XFC present the first ever OktoberFIST on October 13 at the Broncos Leagues Club. With the Australian love of BEER and our love of a good DUST UP it only seemed natural to combine the two. The Germans have their own festival around BEER they’ve just added BIFF. With 5 boxing fights - 5 XFC fights (Xtreme Fighting) and an XSE Wrestling match to keep the punters happy this is going to become one of the most anticipated events on the combat sports calendar for years to come: http://www.xfc.com.au/nextevent.php.
